During our practical with Sue this week, we did a full Elizabethan Make Up look using white foundation to achieve an alabaster base. This is the first time I have used white foundation as a complete base, and as it is quite thick, we were taught the appropriate methods of buffing the foundation in to create a flawless but still pale base. I also covered the brows and lashes in white, and added a simple flush of pink colour to the cheeks and lips.

- Make sure the face is thoroughly cleansed, toned and moisturised. This was you will be able to apply your base to the highest standard, without it looking too thick and almost cakey.
- Take your white foundation, using the back of your hand as a palette, mix some matte primer into the foundation, this will create a completely matte complexion, just like the Elizabethans had.
- Using a foundation brush, apply this over the face, making sure you have covered the ears, around the neck and chest, and applied the foundation all the way up to the hairline. Stretch the neck up to make sure you get into all the creases of the neck properly. At this stage, the foundation may look very thick.
- The next step to create a flawless looking base, is to take a kabuki or duo fibre brush and really buff the foundation into the skin. Don't be afraid to use a little bit more pressure when buffing, this will create a smoother look.
- After this, I took a disposable mascara wand and brush the white foundation right from the root of the lashes to the tip. Ask your sitter to look forward rather than close their eyes, this way it will be easier to get right to the roots. You can also cover the brows, brush the white foundation through the brows in the opposite way that the hairs naturally grow.
- To set the skin, powder with a white or translucent powder, using a powder puff gently pat this over the skin, it is okay for the powder the gather slightly as this creates a textured look and this was common during the Elizabethan Era.
- To add a flush of colour, take a big, round brush and add a baby pink or apricot coloured blush to the apples of the cheeks. Take the same coloured blush and apply this to the lips.
