How Has Make Up Application Changed Since The Elizabethan Era?

This Elizabethan portrait stood out to me because it has some differences to the portraiture I have looked at previously, including the outfit and makeup.  In this portrait, the hair is completely pulled away from the face, and the collar of the gown sits extremely high, allowing you to see the structure of the face very well, as well as seeing each element of the Make Up, although the make up is very minimal.  The ruffles of the collar are reflected in the hair using the pearls, they are similar colours and both add texture and a slight elegance to the look.  In my opinion, the headpiece carries connotations of nature as it has a slight tree shape, this could also symbolise royalty, as they had a very rigid hierarchical system.  The Make Up is very true to the era, including alabaster skin and a rosy glow to the cheeks and lips.

This is a very modern day look created by Lisa Eldridge on Mollie King from The Saturdays.  Just from taking a quick glance at the face, I can see many differences from the style of Make Up the Elizabethans wore.  Firstly, the skin has a subtle golden glow, whereas Elizabethan skin used to be extremely pale with a very rosy glow to the cheeks and lips.  The use of blush here is very minimal, a sweep of baby pink over the cheeks and a nude lip is all that Eldridge has used colour wise, which helps to emphasise the eyes, which are the focal point of the face.  The eyes are the focal point because they have been made to look quite smokey and sultry,  a lot of black shadow and liner has been used to create this look, which was not used back during Elizabethan times.  However, one thing I did notice that is similar is the shape of the hair, Mollie's hair has been styled with a lot of height around the crown, which slightly imitates the heart shaped hair of the Elizabethans.
